Artist Bryan Dahlvang will teach teens how to turn everyday objects into art with his Junk Sculpture program at Pottawatomie County libraries. The workshop is offered as part of the Pioneer Library System’s teen summer reading program, “Express Yourself.”

Dahlvang will be presenting at the Shawnee Public Library  Wednesday, July 1, at 2 p.m.  Space is limited to the first 20 teens who register at the library. Junk is provided, but Dahlvang says that bringing your own junk might be a good idea, especially if it has some sentimental value.

“Teens can expect an hour or so of enjoyment from Junk Sculpture and hopefully a lifetime’s worth of inspiration,” Dahlvang says.

Dahlvang has taught this class, along with painting and drawing classes, since 2002. In addition to teaching, he also is an artist working in many different mediums, and he describes his art as “eclectic.” He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Oklahoma City University.

The programs are free and open to the public thanks to the support of the Friends of the Libraries and Pioneer Library System. Teens using their library’s Punch Card to document participation in the Summer Reading Challenge may enter the drawing for a Grand Prize at the close of summer. The prize is an I-Pod Touch.
