Woman in festival clothingThe Purcell Public Library will host its annual Cinco de Mayo Festival 6 p.m. Friday, May 7 at the library, 919 N. Ninth Street.

The event, co-sponsored by the McClain County Oklahoma Home Community Education group, OSU Extension and the Oklahoma Arts Council, will feature food, crafts and games and other family-friendly activities designed to teach about Hispanic culture and heritage. It coincides with the Cinco de Mayo holiday established in Mexico in 1862.

Activities are planned both inside the library and outside on the library lawn, weather-permitting. Included as part of the event are: There will be a second annual salsa making contest, with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The contest will be judged by local celebrities.
There will be cultural crafts, games and door prizes.
Local vendors will sell authentic Hispanic food items at low prices.
Each child who attends will have a choice of a free book to take home as supplies allow.

The library also will offer several activities in the days leading up to the Friday Festival, including a pot painting presentation May 4, nutritional Mexican food ideas offered May 5 and cultural crocheting May 6.

For more information, call Adriana Chavez-Losoya at 701-2664, at the Purcell Public Library at 527-5546.
