A pair of University of Oklahoma professors that are leading scholars on Congress and politics are taking a deep look into today’s political scene by focusing one of its leaders in their new book “Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the New American Politics.”
The book is written by Cindy Simon Rosenthal, director and curator of the Carl Albert Center for Congressional Research and Studies at the University of Oklahoma, and Ronald M. Peters, Regents Professor at OU and former director for the Carl Albert Center.
The authors will give a lecture, take part in a question-and-answer session and have a book signing at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave., in the Lowry Room. The appearance is sponsored by the Friends of the Norman Public Library, who will be providing refreshments as well.
In their book, Rosenthal and Peters provide a comprehensive account of how Pelosi became speaker and what this tells us about Congress in the twenty-first century. The authors also shed light on Pelosi's political background and trace how she built her base within the House Democratic Caucus and ultimately consolidated enough power to win the Speakership.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, in a fight to the death with twenty-three other participants? That’s the situation sixteen-year-old Katniss finds herself in Suzanne Collins novel The Hunger Games. Join Lit Lovers Book Club on Tuesday, June 1 at 6 p.m. to discuss this suspenseful and thought-provoking book.
The Hunger Games is set in the post-apocalyptic future where the land once known as North America is now the nation of Panem. At the center of Panem is the Capitol and twelve surrounding districts. In order to keep the districts subdued and the citizens complacent, the Capitol forces every district to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a survival competition where the kids must fight to the death and it is all broadcast on live TV. When her younger sister is chosen, Katniss offers to take her place. |

Programs and services of the Norman Public Library are going beyond the library walls with new technologies and traditional services. The Sooner Mall, 3301 W Main, of Norman is now home to a children's story time, innovative book boxes, and a drop box to return library materials. B&B Country Store, 3831 Alameda, now features a book delivery locker and a book drop for library customers near Lake Thunderbird.
Tuesdays at 10 a.m. is story time in the mall in front of Sears. Librarians Charlotte Gordon and Susan Lura lead the preschool age story time. Each week’s activities are centered on a single theme. In addition to reading books, Miss Charlotte and Ms. Susan (as they are called by the children) play music for the children, sing and dance with the children, and tell stories of their own creation using laminated paper figures on a whiteboard. Next to the story time area at the mall, a table is set up displaying children’s books from the library for parents to check out. |
