The Pioneer Library System is sponsoring a touring program to its three-county community offering an entertaining look at America’s history through its art, as well as an opportunity to learn how to interpret what the eye sees. The program is a combination of the National Endowment for the Arts Picturing America project and an expert’s easy-to-understand explanation of visual communication and visual literacy. Noble Public Library which will host this special program for the general public on January 28 at 6 p.m. Call the library to inquire about registration to attend the program.

Programs will be offered in some PLS libraries, public middle and high schools and one retirement village and are appropriate for ages 12 and older. The presentation will focus on selected art pieces from the Picturing America collection but will speak to audiences on how to enjoy art and become aware of art which is all around (including in pop culture). Participants will observe how artists use techniques to convince the viewer of the reality of the subject matter being shown.

The programs will present elements of visual literacy in an informal way and will include interactive components so the audience is involved rather than lectured to, said Jason Dupree Southwestern Oklahoma State University professor and program presenter.

“This is a program for anyone to form an understanding about art and how artists illicit different responses from viewers. Attendees will not only gain an appreciation for historical artwork but will gain an appreciation of art being used in popular culture to influence communication today,” according to Dupree.

Poster-size replications of art masterpieces provided by the National Endowment for the Arts will be on display as will an exhibit depicting elements of visual literacy which was created by Gary Kramer, public information officer for PLS and artist in his own right.

The program presenter, Jason Dupree, is the Head of Public Services at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). He has taught as an adjunct instructor in graphic design and art history and has created and organized several workshops for the SWOSU faculty and state organizations. Dupree serves as the marketing and promotions coordinator for the SWOSU Libraries where he develops student outreach opportunities, organizes a scholarly programming series for the university, and designs library branding and advertising through graphic design applications. Dupree holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Phillips University and a Master of Library & Information Science from the University of Oklahoma.
