Staff Selections: Jean
Last Updated on Monday, 14 May 2012 10:28
This month's "Staff Selections" guest contributor is Jean of the Norman Information Services department. Jean has worked for the Pioneer Library System since 2009, when she was hired by Norman's Computer Training Center to teach classes and assist computer users. She holds two degrees from the University of Texas, a BFA in Art History and an MLIS, and worked in a number of Texas libraries before coming to Pioneer.
"Nearest and dearest to my heart are classic literature novels, particularly the Victorian gothic type, like Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Tess of the D'Urbervilles," says Jean. "They appeal to me because they are so beautifully written and feature a personal account of a strong or independent woman facing adversity, or dealing with the circumstances of her world. To go along with that I like to read novels that explore different periods of history, usually with a woman as the protagonist, like Outlander. I also enjoy the occasional chick lit novel that is humorous with a touch of romance, like Lauren Weisberger's The Devil Wears Prada or Elin Hilderbrand's The Island."
The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe
Jean: "An intriguing mystery with interesting, relatable characters exploring the dramatic history of Salem's witch trials."
The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte by Syrie James
Jean: "A beautifully written imagining of Bronte's inner dialogue that is spot-on, as well as biographically accurate. Bronte's Jane Eyre is my favorite book of all time and this is a very satisfying attempt at recreating her voice."
