Family Game Night planned in Shawnee Print

Shawnee-area families can get together for game time, as the Shawnee Public Library hosts a Family Game Night at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, in Community Room A/B at the library, 101 N. Philadelphia Ave.

Among the games and activities will be a Nintendo Wii, Playstation2, card games, puzzles and old-fashioned board games.

Registration is not required.

Teens invited to work on mural project for library Print

Shawnee-area teens will be “bringing books to life” as part of a two-day mural project at the Shawnee Public Library.

Muralist and creativity coach Amanda Joy Wells will work with teens on the project, which begins at 2 p.m. each day, Wednesday, July 28, and Friday, July 30, at the library.

The workshop, titled “Bringing Books to Life,” seeks to use brainstorming and collaborative activities in order to design and create a series of panelled murals to be exhibited throughout the library.

Books

Adults looking for their next great read are invited to get some tips from an expert at 7 p.m. Monday, July 19, in Community Room A/B at the Shawnee Public Library.

Cindy Stevens, a selector with the Center for Readers Services with the Pioneer Library System, will share some of her favorite authors, discuss their styles and some of the books they have written and offer other ideas.

Registration is not required.

Make some “Nile Style Art” in Shawnee Print

The Shawnee Public Library and Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art will present a pair of “Art to Go” programs for area tweens and teens.

“Nile Style Art” will be offered for teens at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, and for tweens (ages 9-11) at 2 p.m. Friday, July 23. Each program will take place in Community Room A/B at the library, 101 N. Philadelphia Ave.

Participants will learn about Egyptian artifacts and create clay art projects based on the artifacts.

Daniel Lay, preparator at the museum, will be the instructor for the programs. The museum, on the campus of St. Gregory’s University, features collections on Ancient Egypt, Ancient America and the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras, among others.

The Shawnee Public Library will join in the festivities surrounding the International Finals Youth Rodeo’s annual appearance in Shawnee. The rodeo takes place July 12-17 at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center.

At 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, IFYR teen directors from across the country will demonstrate their rodeo roping skills in the library’s Community Room.

There also will be opportunities for autographs and photos with the demonstrators. Registration is not required.

Thursday will be Readin’ and Ropin’ Day at the rodeo itself. Library staff will be at the rodeo for library card signups.  The first 100 rodeo entrants presenting a library card at the gate will receive free admission to the morning's events beginning at 9 a.m.
